Small Buds, Big Impact

I have never been a girl who loves big bouquets full of filler and height. I have always loved single bud arrangements with extraordinary blooms. A couple weeks ago when we were preparing our Valentine's Day Tea, I decided to go with the rare Darcy rose buds in combination with peach spray roses. I love all the pinks coming together arranged in small pink glasses from Anthropologie.

Do you love big arrangements or small sweet ones??

Tuesday Favorites

Last week I was in Arizona celebrating my father's achievement at Man of the Year. We had a fabulous time and just like any other time I am away from the city I find time to visit my favorite store, TARGET. While there last week I found these fabulous items, KID MADE MODERN. I am in love and the kids love them too.  My kids are always drawing and painting. I love the look of the design and the product is amazing. You have to check them out!

A Leafy Surprise

For some time now I have been pining after a Fiddle Leaf Fig tree (check out this post from a year ago!), and I can't help but notice them popping up on at least one page of nearly every magazine these days.  Their oversized leaves and beautiful bright color make this particular large house plant something special-- and apparently everyone else thinks so, since the nursery here just hasn't been able to get one for me.

But this weekend, happy surprise, I stumbled across another nursery that had just gotten in two fig trees (yay!), so I picked out the tallest, fullest one and hurried home with my treat.

I love, love, love it.

Happy Monday!

A little Friday Inspiration...

Hello Friday!
This week has certainly been FULL. L & I have been out of town this week. I have been thawing out in Arizona & she has made her way to Manhattan(single tear we missed each other). This week has got me thinking. Here at Mel & Liza we are all about sharing fabulous projects, beauty, and our little ole lives. Thanks for reading along, you all inspire us too!

Being home is always inspiring too.  Arizona reminds me of where I come from and what I bring to my beloved Manhattan community. This week I was thinking about how a girl from the dessert ends up arranging flowers that I never knew existed. I can't help but think images of flowers on print in Tucson & Mexico has been in my mind all along.

REMEMBER THIS?
The image of Frida on the cover of Vogue has been with me for a very long time. The hot pinks, blush roses, green floral wallpaper has been engrained in my mind. There are just some images that stick with you forever and never leave you.

Where do you draw inspiration?

Dying Curtains

I have been thinking for a while that our dining room could really use some drapes to perk things up a bit and to make the room feel finished.  Pretty much the whole house is begging for some window treatments, but I think the dining room might need it the most.

The walls are painted a pale, yellowy neutral, the surrounding rooms (which you can see easily, because of the open floor plan) are light blues, and the dining room rug is a big pink oriental we found in Vienna and brought home with us.

I have mentioned before that what I would really love to have is gorgeous billowy silk curtains in there, but the ceilings are so high that to get the length I would just cost more than we're willing to cough up at the moment.  So my big idea is to use drop cloths (the cheapest fabric around!) and maybe dye them to a custom color.

I'm thinking a blue of some kind would tie in nicely with the surrounding rooms as well as the framed travel scenes on the wall.

On their website RIT has an extensive dying guide, with tons of example shades and the formulas you use to achieve them- so helpful!  But which shade to choose...

Painting Front Doors

I have been dreaming of painting my white front door for sometime, but have not had the courage to make a choice. Then last month while I was visiting Liza, I was so inspired by her bold red door, which looks fantastic. Since then I have been thinking more and more about which color to choose. Then a friend mentioned mid-night blue and thought this would be the perfect color for my blah door, which by the way is so difficult to clean. So, I finally built the courage to paint the front door this weekend. I ended up with Benjamin Moore's Charcoal Blue.  I am pleased to say I am more then happy with my choice. WHat do you think??

So, I have been on the hunt for the perfect black/blue shade & I think I found it!

I love the finished look. What a good looking door and I had no idea the color would make the entrance feel more finished. I just takes a little detailing.
