Shut the Front Door

A little project that's been on my mind lately is doing something different with our front door.  At the moment it's fine-- a simple stained wood-- that honestly I would have lived with for a long time, maybe even forever.  But Jady has always wanted a red door on a house; it's just one of those things that makes him happy.  So painting ours moved up the long list of projects.

I do love a painted door, and there are a lot of fun options out there for colors you could choose.  In general, dark or light colors do best, since it should provide some contrast with the surrounding exterior of the house.  Midnight and navy blue are crisp and handsome surrounded by lots of white trim, black is modern and sophisticated, and yellow and kelley green are playful.

Miles Reed painted his front door this gorgeous pale blue color, which is complimented by the silver doorknob and hardware.  If we didn't already have pale blue siding on our house, I'd be tempted to copy this look.

Here's the front of our house as it is now:

Once we've painted it, I'll let you know how it turns out!

Happy Monday!

  1. Love these photos and ideas! Also "shut the front door" is one of the most wonderful ways to avoid using expletives. Thanks!
