Oh Christmas Tree...

As soon as Dec. 1st hit I knew it was time to think up some kid friendly decor ideas. First off I thought of our Christmas tree decor; next week I will delve into table top items. Now, I say when you are thinking of attacking a project stay focused on one idea.
This year, my focus was to recreate all the Christmas sparkle without the breakables. I also wanted to decorate a tree in a way that states who we are; we are a family with two small children, one being a curious 22 month old and the other a creative four year old.
So, how do you decorate a Christmas tree with a 22 month old around while including the sensibility of a four year old; the answer YARN inspired decor.

My first inspiration came around Thanksgiving when I was purchasing colorful wool balls from Anthropologie

I also purchased an assortment of colorful wool yarn, hoping for a non-breakable Christmas.  I do not want to be the mother constantly terrified the children are going to break something for an entire month, it is much easier to put the breakables away rather then be stressed the children may get a little too curious while I am in the kitchen.

By the way did you notice the Japanese colored tape in the background? This colorful tape is perfect if you like using brown wrapping paper; it adds the right amount of POP against any brown or newspaper wrapping.

OPERATION YARN
I purchased blue & pink yarn, I find it fun to stretch tradition a bit.  I am a firm believer that when you have any decorating project it ought to be integrated with your family culture.  That way you have room to evolve over the years and your frequently presented with  the opportunity to recreate your dwelling space.

On a SIDE NOTE: I am hoping to scoop up these breakables for Christmas 2012.

Because we are not using glass balls for our lights to sparkle against I  found myself tempted to buy tinsel. Now, I know tinsel is so passé, but you know there is nothing cooler then being so tacky you're hip. Unfortunately, we could not find any so, Miss. S found this beautiful glitter instead. I must say I was attracted to the packaging just as much as she was.

The Tree
With yarn in mind as well as non-breakables,  I pulled out any soft yarn based decorations I had.  What I found were knit letters, knit birds, and white snow owls.

These birds would have been a great addition, I have my eye on them for next year!

I strung the yarn balls with different lengths of string, I love the effect of the various lengths and sizes.

Anthropologie carries a variety of knit letters. I bought one letter for each of us M, S, H, J.  They make the tree feel so personal.

I love our wool inspired tree.  It is simple, elegant, and completely child friendly. The pink yarn is such a fun change from the usual red beads. I also love the addition of our yarn birds and owls.
I say when it comes to decorating, choose a theme and go with it. You are bound to have a project you love.

Check in Thursday  for some modern baby shower floral inspirations.

Carinos,

M
